چکیده

In this study, the removal of cadmium (Cd) by free-living Oscillatoria sp. was studied. Our results showed that maximal Cd efficiency (~60%) cyanobacterial culture achieved within 12–24 h in presence 5.0 or 25.0 mg/L Cd. The mechanisms underlying phenomenon were explored elemental analysis and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. It found metal adsorption negatively charged functional groups biomass main mechanism used to remove from aqueous medium, followed bioaccumulation into living cells. Additionally, Cd-exposed microalgae increased oxidative stress (MDA formation), a decreased dehydrogenase activity, higher amount soluble carbohydrates total carotenoid concentration, as compared control These suggest improved its antioxidative defense system under stressful conditions, through carotenoid-mediated ROS quenching induction carbohydrate catabolism, order counteract damage preserve photosynthetic machinery cellular energetics. fact, no significant reduction cell density, protein amount, chlorophyll content observed after 24-h exposure, even at highest concentration tested (i.e., mg/L). Hence, presented are first describe some new insights about metabolic physiological behavior during remediation, open up possibility finding an equilibrium maximizes performance with active metabolism, achieve rewarding sustainable management industrial metal-polluted wastewater.

Biosorption of Cadmium and Manganese Using Free Cells of Klebsiella sp. Isolated from Waste Water

In the present study, we evaluated a bacterium that was isolated from waste water for its ability to take up cadmium and manganese. The strain, identified both biochemically and by its 16S rRNA gene sequence as Klebsiella, was named Yangling I2 and was found to be highly resistant to heavy metals. Surface characterization of the bacterium via SEM revealed gross morphological changes, with cells...

Human Health Effects from Cadmium Exposure: Comparison between Persons Living in Cadmium-contaminated and Non-contaminated Areas in Northwestern Thailand.

Environmental cadmium contamination is present in some rural villages of Mae Sot District, Tak Province, northwestern Thailand. We compared the health of 751 persons aged ≥ 35 years living in 3 contaminated villages with 682 people from 3 non-contaminated villages with similar socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics in the same district. All the subjects were screened for urinary cadmiu...

Cadmium Removal from Contaminated Water Using Polyelectrolyte-Coated Industrial Waste Fly Ash

Fly ash (FA) is a major industrial waste generated from power stations that add extra cost for proper disposal. Recent research efforts have consequently focused on developing ways to make use of FA in environmentally sound applications. This study, therefore, investigates the potential ability of raw fly ash (RFA) and polyelectrolyte-coated fly ash (PEFA) to remove cadmium (Cd) from polluted w...

Potential perchlorate exposure from Citrus sp. irrigated with contaminated water.

Citrus produced in the southwestern United States is often irrigated with perchlorate-contaminated water. This irrigation water includes Colorado River water which is contaminated with perchlorate from a manufacturing plant previously located near the Las Vegas Wash, and ground water from wells in Riverside and San Bernardino counties of California which are affected by a perchlorate plume asso...
